Correspondence (no letters of Smith are included); gubernatorial commissions; a gubernatorial respite in the execution of a convicted felon; court orders (one signed by Smith); land, voter registration, and other certificates; promissory notes; tax receipts, receipt for promissory notes assigned for collection, and other receipts; newspaper pages; contract; deed; military discharge; a fragmentary newspaper clipping; plats; memorandum; poems (one of which, in several copies, is apparently by Smith); and currency and bond of the Civil War period issued by the Confederate States of America, by the State of Arkansas, by the State of Louisiana, and by the city of Shreveport. Material relating directly to Smith pertains to his youth and education before coming to Arkansas Territory in 1832, to his Unionist sympathies during the Civil War, to his religious activity, to his literary efforts, and especially to his enforcement and other work as Clark County sheriff and tax collector, 1835-1844. Other material pertains to realty transactions; tax payments and delinquencies; business transactions in and around Arkadelphia; the military service of one of Smith's sons; casualties sustained by the 7th Infantry, 3rd Division in World War I; and other matters.

The Seventh U.S. Infantry was organized under the act of Congress approved July 16, 1798, with William Bentley as Lieutenant Colonel Commandant.
